Invisalign® FAQ

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an alternative treatment option to braces. It uses a series of custom clear aligners to incrementally straighten teeth.

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible, highly effective, and sometimes even faster than traditional braces. They are generally more comfortable than conventional braces and make cleaning your teeth during your treatment simple.

What are the advantages of Invisalign over regular braces?

One of the biggest advantages is that the aligners are practically invisible. Because they are removable there are no dietary restrictions (such as popcorn, gum, corn-on-the-cob, etc.), and cleaning your teeth is easier than with braces. They are also typically more comfortable than braces as there are no brackets or wires.

Is Invisalign as good as regular braces?

The answer is almost always yes. There are, however, some complex cases that are better served with traditional braces. To be effective, Invisalign treatment does require the patient to wear their aligners at least 22 hours a day. If a patient feels they cannot commit to this, traditional braces may be a better choice, as they are non-removable.

How long does Invisalign take?

The duration varies depending on the complexity of the case, but treatment typically takes 6 – 12 months.

How long do Invisalign results last?

Like traditional braces, Invisalign results will last indefinitely provided the patient complies with their retention program. This means wearing special retainers every night. Retainers may need replacement every few years due to wear and tear.

How much does Invisalign cost?

The fee range is $3000 - $6000, depending on the complexity of the case. Insurance usually covers a portion of this fee, though the amount of coverage depends on an individual’s specific policy.

How do I pay for Invisalign?

Payment of 1/3 is requested prior to starting the process. If desired, arrangements can be made to finance the balance over the course of the treatment time.

What is cheaper – braces or Invisalign?

The costs of braces and Invisalign are comparable.

How often do I need to come in for Invisalign check-ups?

Invisalign works by using a series of aligners to move the teeth. These aligners are replaced every 10-14 days by the patient at home. Check-ups are typically scheduled every 4-6 weeks.

How painful is Invisalign?

At the onset of treatment, most people report mild soreness. This may last for a week or so and is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain medications. As treatment progresses, there is generally little or no discomfort.

Is it difficult to talk with Invisalign?

No. After a few hours of acclimation, speech returns to normal.

Can you drink and eat with Invisalign?

It is fine to drink with Invisalign aligners in place, but they should be removed when eating. After eating, the teeth and aligners should always be cleaned.
